Someone with more gumption than I will pull out the books and give you
the scholarly answer but I'm betting nobody knows for sure when the
changeover occurred. I'm guessing late 60's but I once owned an orignal
looking '67 BGT with a steel bonnet.
In any case, scarf up the steel bonnet and rejoice! The aluminum bonnets
are so fragile that the only way to find a pristine one is to find a car
where the oil ain't checked but once every couple of years. Everytime
you shut the bonnet the aluminum ones give a little. A couple of
thousand times and they all have putty at the pointy end on the next
respray.
