The exhaust should be polished to a high gleam, but not so the
intake......but, why not?

The intake needs to maintain a little turbulence to keep the gasoline in
suspension; the exhaust needs high polish to keep a laminar flow to induce
the complete expulsion of spent gases.

I recommend David Vizard's excellent book on tuning the A Series engine.  It
explains far more then most may need, but also how much to expect from your
engine.  It may surprise you to learn how much can be pulled out of the 948,
1098, and best of all, the 1275.  The poor old 1500 Spit engine is not
covered.
