I'd suspect you've transposed your data/results, considering that the
american gallon is app. 20% SMALLER than a normal gallon.  Litres are
the same in both countries!!

Yup, one of the easiest ways to improve your milage... slow down below
60 mph/100 kph AIRSPEED.  If you've got a 20 mph tailwind, then go for
it, or live dangerously and draft a semi when you're bucking a headwind

BTW, you do get better milage at highway speeds with the top UP.  Higher
top speed also, because of the better slipstreaming effect.
