You can try a good quality set of jumper cables to rule out the postive wire.
Unhook the cables from the battery.  Hook the jumpers to the battery.  Hook
the red side to the proper terminal on the starter then hook the negative
side to a clean ground on the engine.  Turn the key.  You might want to
insure that it is in neutral as when the clutch is depressed, the engine will
tend to turn a little slower.
