Not necessarily difficult to mend.  First challenge is to determine why
it doesn't work. 
1  disconnect cable from speedo unit and drive the car.  If you can see
the end of the cable turn, then the speedo instrument is inoperative and
needs to go to a specialist firm.
2  If you can't see the end of the cable turn, you have to determine if
the other end of the cable is turning, or substitute another cable. Screw
the substitute into the gearbox and drive the car (or block it up very
carefullly and let the engine turn the wheels--carefully lest you make
another opening in the garage)
3  If the substitute cable doesn't work, it's likely that the cable is
not being turned by the transmission. You will need to refer to the
illustrations in the workshop  manual and the Moss catalogue for help at
this point to remove and inspect pieces, and to the list for advice.
