Hi Chris:

Your friend is partly right and completely right if you discount the
Mustang-based cars.

The AC-Bristol and early Cobra used independent rear suspension by
transverse leaf like Spitfire.  the later Cobras were coil sprung
independent, while the Mustangs were all live axle.
