I had the same problem with a Corvair Corsa.  I replaced a large part of the
windshield base/ front wing (horrible rust area on a 'Vair) which had
previously included the aerial.

My first solution was a "stick-on" wire antenna (looked like the
add-on rear defoggers- single wire, about 36" long).  Ran it up the
windscreen at the a-pillar and across the top.  Worked okay, but
looked a bit tacky.  Radio Shack cost: about $10.

Current solution: a thru-the-glass cellular-type aerial.  No drilling.
Mount the receiver pad (attached to the coax) on the inside of any
window (instructions showed front, rear, "fixed" sidelights, and vent
windows as options).  The aerial pad sticks to the glass at the same
position on the outside.  Everything is flat black and the 8" aerial
is moveable.  I keep mine flat against the glass (rear window) vice
vertical.  Totally reversible, fairly inconspicuous, and works
terrifically! About $15 from Wal-Mart.

(On the Corvair, there's plenty of room underdash for an aftermarket
system.  On my TR, the options are a bit more limited, as is the
speaker placement. On the Corvair, I use a "speaker box" on the
recessed rear shelf which contains two woofers, two mid-range, and two
tweeters.  $25 from JCW.  Quality is poor, but better than stock.  It
is completely (and easily removable) for security and showing the car.)
