It has truly been an incredible weekend thus far for my MGB and me. I
drove it to school yesterday, and on the way home, noticed that the tire
would vibrate violently, lose a piece of rubber, then stop vibrating.
This happened twice and I pulled over. I noticed that I was one step
shy of a blowout...the tread had separated from the sidewall, but the
tire still held air. Being 30 miles from home with no jack or spare
tire, I had to call for help (carry a cell phone in your MG!!!). My
cousin brought my spare and jack. That round trip was 70 miles.
So I had to replace four tires. No one in my town carried a suitable
brand in 175/70R14. So I had to travel to Cleveland...45 miles. I
bought Toyo 800s to replace the BF Goodrich "Lifesavers" the PO had
installed. The Toyos made a phonemenal difference. Steering effort is
lighter, and the tires no longer screech when I turn a corner. I guess
that's a good thing.
>From Cleveland it was off to the girlfriend's house...60 miles, bringing
my total to 175. Straight shot, very boring.
Today, driving home in the hills and curves, I noticed the smell no MG
owner likes to smell...burning wires!!!! The ignition warning buzzer
was melting its plastic case... guess I broke it when I tried to take
out / reinstall the broken CD Player. So I turned the car off,
disconnected the battery, and took apart the console on the roadside.
Now all is okay, but my warning buzzer (which hasn't worked in the two
years I've had the car), is melted. Oh well, no loss. Now I must
reassemble my interior.
With misc. trips, it was 250 miles in two days, which would've been
trouble free without the fire - partially my fault. Three hours with
the top down as well!!
