Actually, I'd say the pinnacle was in '67.  Not because I have a '67, I have 
a '67 because it is the pinnacle.  On top of the reasons you like the '69 
the reason I believe this is that it has:
1.  The tin dash with the cleanest gauge set-up compared to later years
2.  The 5 main bearing crank which should be stronger and last longer
3.  No emissions equipment, therefore the highest power ratings - '68 
started emmisions

Actually, any '65 thru '67 has all of these supposedly superior features.

I've heard that the 3 main engine is more free revving, and it may be (based 
on my MGA that has a 3 main B block), but I've also heard it is weaker, and 
more likely to break a crank.  If you like the 3 main engine, then the '64 
would be the pinnacle.  It has the tin dash, no emissions, and those lovely 
pull door handles.
