Trailer questions (not very MG)

I am about to embark on a journey of epic stupidity. Through the great
bounty of this list, I have located and agreed to purchase a large pile of
parts represented to be what remains of a 1958 Jaguar XK150 Fixed Head
Coupe. Although the owner (being of sound mind and body) does not
guarantee that all parts are there, he does feel comfortable that there are
at least as many duplicates of some parts as there are shortages of others
so the basic number of parts is fairly correct and most of them came off
some sort of Jaguar.

As with any purchase of this type, said pile of parts is 1800 miles away in
another country. To this end I have borrowed my brother's Ford pickup and
rented a trailer. Said pickup has the standard step bumper/trailer hitch
with a 3/4 inch hole for the ball. The trailer of choice- a beautiful
tandem low boy with a solid wood be and stake pockets- takes a 2 5/16 ball
which only comes with a one inch stud.

So the question is- Can I tow this trailer across two mountain ranges
twice using the step bumper hitch? Has anyone seen a 2 5/16 ball with a
3/4 inch stud? I don't really want to drill my brother's bumper out to
one inch.

The truck has 150k miles on it and, to make me feel at home, leaks clutch
fluid such that you have to refill the reservoir twice a week or so. Only
one of the tires is showing steel cords but I think the spare is better.
In other words it is in much better shape than anything I drove cross
country in college and I always seemed to make it home back then.
