That's not so bad really.
Some original manuals list "oil consumption" as
a specification. Just grabbing a book off the
shelf I opened to a road review of a 1098cc Midget
from the early 60s, and it's listed as having
an oil consumption of 8000mpg when new.
That's at least in the same ballpark as what
you are experiencing. When scaled up from 1098cc
to 1798cc it gets a bit closer.
I wouldn't worry about it.
