This whole conversation brings back a few memories and a few laughs
that I finally had to share.

My roomate and I lived about 3 miles from school when we were in
college. I owned an 84 Mazda GLC hatchback, 5 speed, 1.5L I think.
He, all 6 foot 3 300 lbs, owned an early 80s Toyota Tercel, 5 speed.

Every morning when we went to class we would not say anything, but the
drive to school always ended up in a race between the gerbil powered
cars. The big risk was to cut through the grocery store parking lot
or try to make it through the light, turn right and get ahead of the
other guy going through the lot. If you could get ahead, you just
drove along side another car all the way to school on the 2 lane road
and victory was yours. Many a time we wound those cars as high as they
would go. Always we got out of the cars with big grins and a great
start to the day (even though it was a little dangerous)

I bought the GLC for $1000 with 98k miles on it, drove it for 4 years,
sold it for $1000 with 161k miles on it.

My roomate....wrecked the Tercel on the way to school one day when we
did not race as I had to be there early. Maybe I should have waited
for him.
