The first overhaul I did, I took out the engine only, leaving the
transmission in the car. And then, it was a real bitch lowering the engine
in and trying to mate it with the gearbox. It has to go in perfectly
straight. Took me half a day to wrestle them together.

On my 71BGT, I've pulled the transmission a few times, leaving the engine
in the car. The engine/gearbox mating no longer posed a problem because I
perfected a way to make it go in straight.

Assuming the clutch pressure plate is lined up correctly - you just need to
make sure the transmission pilot shaft goes into the crankshaft pilot
bushing straight. I take some extra long 5/16" bolts (5 or 6" long) and use
those on a few of the holes that connect the rear engine plate to the bell
housing. Use those to line up the gap between the plate and the bell
housing so the gap is the same all the way around - then use the bolts to
pull them together. If lined up properly, you should be able to easily pull
the two surfaces together.
