alternator belt adjustment

My alternator belt is loose, and I tried to adjust it tonight.(partly
because I ran the stereo off battery and the thing wouldn't start!)
The nut to get the thing moving is under and behind-  does anyone have
tricks on how to get to this nut easily?  should the nut actually be on
the front of the alternator?  Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

PS- I now can fold my top appropriately, thanks to the wisdom of this
