1979 MGB Engine No. Question

I have aquired a 1970 MGB, but I am confused about the eng. number.  the 
plate on the block starts out with 12V/  not 18V/, can anybody tell me what 
kind of car this engine came from?  There is no indication that the number 
plate has been altered.  And the number sequencing is appropriate for the
