SNIP -

The best way (?) to check an exhaust leak, is to press a shoe to the output,
stopping air from getting out of the exhaust. If the engine dies, no/very
little leak. Also very easy 'with a little help from my friends' to hear
where the leak is.
My engine stopped. Be careful, exhaust is hot !!! And the gas is dirty. And
I had white trousers !

Dear List:

I watched somebody do this once. The exhaust system, which probably would
have lasted at least another year (or thousands of miles) could not tolerate
the pressure that built up when the tailpipe was blocked, and several
fittings (or holes in the hose) burst. His concern about the health of the
exhaust system became a self fulfilling prophecy. And the engine did stall
out, too.

Hope this helps. Perhaps a better way to check is to take a modest size
piece of white paper under the car while it is running. Hold the paper
lightly and move it along side the exhaust apparatus. If there are gases
escaping, they will blow the paper away, or you will notice soot collecting
on it.

Also, is anybody going to the Positive Earth car show in Lavallette, New
Jersey on Sunday July, 25th?
