Steve,
You might want to check your vacuum hoses to your emissions equipment.  A 
crack in one of the larger ones (specifically breather) will cause an immense 
drop in vaccuum, thus allowing the damper in the carb to drop and preventing 
much needed fuel from entering the engine.  Hence, a power loss.   A crack 
(or loose fit hose) can cause an intermittent problem by momentarily opening 
and closing due to engine movement, vibration, a bump in the road, etc.
