Dan,

I hesitate to suggest this, because I think it means pulling your
engine/gearbox again, but I have a strong suspicion that you have wired
your backup lights to the overdrive "cutout" switch and your overdrive
to the backup light switch.  They are very similar, but are on different
sides of the gearbox.  I would have to think about it a bit more, but be
very careful not to reverse the car with overdrive engaged!
