I had a high pitched whine that turned out to be the alternator. Put a tube
from your ear to the alt. to see if you can isolate the sound.

I've got a high pitch whine (sounds like a loose fanbelt, but it's not)
that I can't pinpoint. At times it sounds as if it's coming from the
waterpump or there abouts, at other times it sounds as though it's from
the transmission (maybe a throw-out bearing?) The sound goes away when
under a slight load yet comes back at idle or at cruise speed. Any
ideas?
