cold in Boston

This all reminds me that somehow I must have acquired "grace": the battery
in my '76 B was of indeterminate age when I bought the car in 1991. It is
still going - VERY strong. Hey folks, it ain't clean livin'. What on
earth keeps this battery going? Hardly a leapyear goes by that I don't at
least check the terminals for corrosion. I have never added any water.
Granted, we don't have Boston weather here in SW Virginia, but I would
expect a 10+ year-old battery to baulk a bit when the temp approaches zero.
I'm expecting failure almost anytime now, but with a record like this, I
can't bring myself to summarily replace the thing. After all this faithful
service, it deserves the opportunity to die with dignity on the job. My
Lucas alternator has obviously done its job. Come to think of it, I've
never had a Lucas failure that couldn't be attributed to old age and DPO
neglect. I think Lucas is pretty good stuff. You want to see frightening
electrics? Try a Peugeot sometime. I did... (Actually, my current Nissan
pickup rates a close 2nd-worst!)
