I think in 'The Original MGB' they said that actually 6 MGBGT-V8's were sent to 
the US and tested for import, and passed.
  The problem was that MG was limited to something like 50 Rover V8's a week, 
and there was no way they could produce enough cars for the US market, so the 
decision was made the limit the production for home market until the engine 
situation could be resolved, which it never was.
