Paul:

No one is arguing that there are some real factory MGB GT V8s in the
states. There are a small number that were privately imported. Some of
these may have been converted to LHD, a very easy task. The question was
whether any of the original LHD development V8s that were shipped to the
states remained in the US. The answer appears to be no. Although within
MGdom there seems to be no definitive answer to anything.

As to originality. We face the same problem that faces Mini Cooper
owners.

Most, if not all of the V8 specific components, short of the cast
iron manifolds are available either used, or as repro's. Building a V8 GT
clone is possible, but doesn't make a whole lot of sense as the original car
did have a number of problems that can be easily rectified using now readily
available alternatives.

oooohhhh...wait a minute...!
Granted factory V8's are not my specialty, but I do know enough
about the details of the cars to know the one I saw at MG98 Concours
in Hagerstown MD was real! Three were not, but looked pretty darn close!
Now if only he had been willing to put it on the field.
Two other 'masters' standing around also commented on this car and agreed
it was real.

David Knowles' "MG V8 21 years on" (a 'Clausager' for the V8) confirms that
seven LHD were prepared for the US and passed all tests. They were all
returned to the UK and, in 1994 at least, had all been traced to owners in
Switzerland (3), Holland(3) and Germany (1).

week, and there was no way they could produce enough cars for the US market,
so the decision was made the limit the production for home market until the
engine situation could be resolved, which it never was.
