I recently bought a used '67 B electric tach to put in my MGA with my
1800 conversion.  It was reading high as well, although I don't know why.
 What I did is to recalibrate it using a hand-held tachometer. 
Instructions for calibration are in the archives, but what you have to do
is to take the tach apart, hook it up, then adjust it using the
adjustment screw at the back of the "works."
