I have an Ingersol Rand nibler. I don't recall how thick of material it will
cut. There are a few problems with them.
1) If you're trying to cut through strengthing ribs it's difficult to get the
cutter to go up and down over them.
2) You wind up with all sorts of little thin half moon chips all over the
floor. These chips embed themselve into soft soled shoes guite easily and soon
they'll be sticking clear inside and poking you in the foot. They also stick
out and snag on any carpet you may walk on.
3) It's difficult to follow a line as the cutter obscures the line you're trying
to follow
4) It's difficult to cut a straight line unless you clamp on a straight edge.
Again, it's because the cutting line is hidden by the outside of the cutter.
5) They take out alot of material so you have to allow for the fact that you
loose about 1/8" of material between the two pieces.
6) You have to drill about a 3/8 hole to get it started in the middle of a
panel.
I found I still have to use a cut off wheel much of the time when cutting on a
car body. I think on some of the next patches I am going to try a sabre saw
with a metal cutting blade.
I'd also like to try an air driven metal shear.
