The diff is wider, wheel to wheel than the diffs found in the sports cars, 
but does take the same third member etc.

Elva Couriers had A series diffs, out of a Riley 1.5 I think, which, like the 
Magnette, is wider than the spridget. A friend has used a spridget rear end, 
so the difference can't be that much. They also had a substitute B series 
axle homologated for SCCA racing (because the A series almost always 
self-destructed), which if fitted, left you in the rather inconvenient 
situation of having different bolt patterns front and rear - I think the 
Sprite is 4 1/4" as opposed to the 4 1/2" of the B series (and forget the 
Spitfire - it is something like 3 3/4", or something oddball and unique to 
itself).
