Dennis, I just bought an alternator for my 74 Midget from Autozone. I'm not
sure if they are the same alternator or not, but it has a lifetime warranty
which they are very good about honoring. I think I paid around $90.00 for
the alternator, with a $15.00 core since I broke the housing on my old
alternator. I ordered it one day and it arrived the next. When I had a 70
B I ordered one from Advance, same thing, arrived the next day with a
lifetime warranty. Hope this helps.

Good Luck,

Ken

Members and Readers,

Please excuse any "venting", its DAMN hot here in Texas,
and this MG just wont stay up!

Okay... so here's the problem (seems as if it never ends).

Over the last 4 years, I have replaced 5 alternators.
The first several lasted just outside of the warrenty period.
One of them, the fan belt broke, whipping around, it broke the
water pump bracket and the bracket on the alternator...
This was clearly not covered under the warrenty.

So, on Saturday, after driving around with an alternator that
had a broken bracket (but still worked fine), I bought a new
one from an MG specialist here in Dallas.

Well, on Sunday, this new alternator failed. Jezzz... lasted less then
45 miles.

So, here's my problem(s):

1) Sometime ago, I ordered an alternator from Autozone.
After about two weeks, it finally arrived! Crap! the connector
was the wrong type! Everything else looked right, but the
    connector was clearly wrong.

2) I had ordered just the outter bracket (from Moss) in an attempt
to salvage the broken (yet working) alternator... After
dismantelling
it, I discovered that the new outter bracket was the wrong size.
The alternator bearings were too small... In the process of
disassembly,
I broke the pulley shaft on the old alternator (now its useless...)

3) The MG Specialist here in Dallas charged me 180+ dollars for this
new alternator (yep, only lasted 45 miles). Thats also 30 bucks less
for an un-rebuildable core. And, I had to drive out there, pick it
up,
and install it in my MG. 180+ bucks seems a bit unrealistic.

Here's my problem...

Where on this green Earth can I find a place that will sell me, at a
reasonable
price, an alternator that I know will fit on this car?

I don't want to have to pay shipping several times just because they
sent
me the wrong part.

Am I expecting too much, or what?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Dennis Berman
