Go to:

and search the archives for "converting to Negative ground." There will be
several messages on how the converting is done and it will also tell you what
the PO may have done to affect the conversion to Negative ground.

In the meantime, there are three basic changes that normally would have been
done.

1) Switch the terminals on the battery.

2) Polarize the generator.

3) Switch the low tension leads on the coil.

However, many PO's only do steps one and two.

1) The positive terminal on the battery is larger than the negative.
Consequently the positive cable will have a clamp with a larger hole. If the
cable running to the starter has the clamp with the larger end, then the system
is negative ground and vice versa.

I can think of only two ways of determining if the generator has been
polarized. Run the car and if the generator doesn't put out current than
perhaps it's been done. Figure out which ends/sides of the field coils are
supposed to be North and South, and then determine if the fields in the
generator are reversed. This would probably require a known negative ground or
positive generator and a long bar magnet.

Since conversion is so easily done, set the electrical system up the way you
want it in the same manner as if the conversion was never done.
