It's possible the switch is bad, but also simply that you don't have enough
coolant. If you haven't replaced the cap ever, you might want to, but
first just make sure you have coolant in there. If it gets too low, not
only will the car get hotter, but you won't be able to get enough coolant
up to hit the switch, thus compounding the problem.
This is less of a problem when driving, because you have moving air, but
definitely an issue when in bumper-to-bumper little-moving traffic.
Of course, if you are low on coolant, the next question would be WHY are
you low on coolant. But first things first..
