  Incidently, points are easily available for any postwar
LUCAS points distributor, but the original distributor in
your 79 would not have had points, it would have had
LUCAS electronic ignition.

  So likely your distributor has been changed to who-knows-what
with who-knows-what timing characteristics, or else the
module might have fried and was replaced with an aftermarket
one.

  The latter would be correct repair technique, but I am
still a little skeptical of the line "couldn't find points
anywhere"... I'd really question the work of whoever told
this to you as they fiddled with your car.

  It's usually so much easier and faster to just start
from the beginning and get everything correct than to
try to solve a running problem with one adjustment here,
one adjustment there, etc.
