Bentley shows the capacities at 10 Imperial gallons for early tourers, and
12 Imperial gallons for late tourers and GTs (or 12 and 14 US gallons, or
45.5 and 54 litres, respectively).

One reason why you would only be able to pump 6 or 7 gallons would be that
the vent pipe was clogged (prematurely triggering the pump shut-off).
Another one could be that the tank has collapsed, which is one possible (if
unlikely) consequence of a clogged vent pipe combined with a non-venting
cap. Have you looked at the tank from underneath? It may have collapsed from
the top down, leaving the bottom more or less intact.
