Hi Paul,

  The rule of 9 point shouldn't be that critical  The heel of the lobe
being quite a few degrees wide.  I've run into the phenomenon you
describe several times.  It usually is because of worn cam bearings
which allow the cam to flex abnormally under load.  The worst offender
was a Fiat twin-cam of my wife's, where the cam ran directly in the
aluminum cam towers.  Bummer, what with having to shuffle thise
spacers.  Anyhoo, it would explain why your  adjustment points are so
critical.  YMMV.
