Ken, After removing the defroster hoses did you also remove the connector
tubes behind the hose plate?  Like you, I thought I'd never get the heater
from my 69, but it finally came out.  The bigger problem for me was getting
it back in after having it powdercoated.  I had attached the air control
cable first as there was no way I was going to be able to do it from inside
the car .  The problem was that do to the close fit of the heater box and
the opening, the cable severely bent at the defroster flap upon installation
and wouldn't operate.  After two failed trys, I decided upon the following
solution.  I cut an approx. two inch by a quarter inch vertical groove in
the bulkhead opening above and inline with the cable.  With the heater box
resting on the rear of the engine I again feed the cable inside only this
time it was in the groove.  The heater dropped in and the cable was unbent
and operates.  Someone with more MGB experience may have a better idea, but
this worked for me.
