Looks like a nice & simple plan, but the room behind the gauge is not
overwhelming though.
Is a try to lubricate the angle drive worthwhile at first place?

Yes, Joseph I can help you with your angle drive dilemma.  Carefully
remove it, and throw it in the San Francisco Bay.  Then replace your
speedo cable with the longer overdrive style.  Be careful to route the
new cable so you maximize the bend radius'.
