differential filling plug tool

Hey,
I have heard about the plug removal tool that you can make yourself, but
isn't there a better way?  My old rear axle had a hex type plug, so I
will be refitting that, but isnt' there a better way of getting it out
than whittling down a bolt or a rachet?  Please let me know if anyone
has anything simple out there.
