Greg:

You said you adjusted idle mixture by feel? Even put a vacuum gauge to the
old lady?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks on the intake to head interface and on
the carb to intake interface? If not, go get some carb cleaner spray and
spray it on these interfaces while the car idles. If the idle rpm change
(go up) you will have found a vac. leak. New gaskets to reseal are in
order.

A not very accurate method to know your mixture is much to lean (e.g.
caused by a fat vac. leak) is by holding your hand(s) over the carb(s) air
intake(s). If the motor does not die pretty quick but will run smoother
that way, you have too lean a mix and possibly a vacuum leak problem.

How about the fuel delivery? Are you sure you get enough gas to the carb?
Also, have you checked the float level(s).

Good Luck. And don't give up, you'll find it. Good thing with such
gremlins is that you overhaul the whole system until you find the bug and
you get a great tuneup out of it that you would have not done otherwise!
