SU HD series

I was pouring over the differences in SU carboretors last night and 
remembered how convenient it is to adjust HD6 (or 8) from the top screws and 
not have to reach below to adjust the mixture.  Yet this series was not as 
common as the HS series.

Does anyone know why the HD series was not produced and used more?
