Hi again Lawrie,

  An electronic switch gives cleaner switching to the current at the
coil than does a set of points.  If you stretch out the pulse from the
coil enough on your scope, you'll see that the leading edge of the
firing pulse is a lot cleaner with electronic ignition than with points
(no switch arcing).  This means that there is less energy lost at the
outset, resulting in more being delivered to the plug.  Nothing like a
nice clean leading edge for efficiency and precision.
