Subject: Some ignition system questions...

I have a '80 that is having some really bad starting problems. For a while
I thought it was the choke, but I no longer think that.

The reason I thought it was the choke is because it takes forever to get the
car started especially when cold. So following a tip from the list, I
removed the air filter and squirted a little gas with a spray bottle
directly down the carb. Guess what? It didn't even try to fire.

So now I am looking at the ignition system. It is getting kinda late, so I
had to close up shop for the evening. I know what am I thinking. :)

What is happening is that when I get the car to start it run very rough,
doesn't want to idle, and in the last couple of sessions can't get the rpm's
up over about 4k.

I grabbed a tip off the net (compliments of Barney Gaylord) that the last
part maybe a busted flex wire on the distributer. I will check that.

Here are the questions:

1. The '80 Bs didn't have electronic ignition did they? Could be a moot
point as mine has and Allison Electronic Ignition system in it already.

2. How old is the Allison Ignition System? By all counts it looks like
Crane has taken them over or some such.

3. How long should I expect such a system to last?

4. Reguardless of how long it has been in the car, should I replace the
system just because it says Allison on it? I know that pieces and parts
start out being a good idea, but just turn out to be dud's. I guess I am
really asking about history of these things.

5. If I need to replace it, any recommendation on what type of ignition
system I should replace it with?

6. Any recommendations on what type of plugs wires, and etc that I should
update the current wires with?

Also this car has about 80k miles on it, and I am really wanting to make it
a daily driver. This is the last real hang up(so far). I managed to fix
the brake system problems and a couple of other things. I just haven't had
enough engine time/MGB owner time to figure this stuff out for myself.

Thanks in advance,
Harold
