   Patton,

    Have you talked to any motor freight companies in your area?  They might not
care if it's crated or not.  I biyght a knock-down engine hoist form an OR mfr
that was shipped motor freight.  The only thing that was boxed was the jack.  
The
rest was loose and each piece had its own shipping label.  You might be able to
bolt a piece of  plywood to the top to protect the cylinders, make a shallow 
tray
for the bottom and have them strap the mess together.

  Or buy a used pallet and nail some 2x4s to that and  set the block on them
upright, cage the pallet with 2x4 corner posts and 1x3 slats.  I had a Yugo
engine done up for shipping that way.

  I have a bare 5 main block in the basement.  If noone else can come up with 
the
weight, I'll take my BR scales down there, root it out and weigh it for you.
