What type of oil should I use? My dad has been using a cheap
10W30 since he has been paying for the parts, but I have finally
convinced him to use the oem parts. And now that it's my car, I
will be paying for the parts. Eventually I'll be needing to do new
suspension, and wanting a cam/header setup later on. Any
Suggestions on what to get in this department!

I most heartily recommend Valvoline or even better Valvoline Racing
Oil. In a new LBC I recommend the 10W40 but in a high performance
engine like mine I use 20W50 Racing grade. I remain convinced this
is the world's best engine lubricant. When I saw the lab reports
back in 1964, I called Valvoline and said, "I'm convinced you have
the best oil available; will you sponsor me"

They gave me a case of racing grade for every race I successfully
completed, an enormous advantage in the 60's, when sponsorship was
almost nonexistent except for a few top stars. The products have
never let me down.

I don't use anything else in my engines. The Synthetic stuff may be
theoretically better, but (IMO) it's not cost-effective in leaky
LBC's. ;)

I recommend a cam from Vizard/Apted; I think they are almost
miraculous when it comes to cams for 4-cyl. engines. I run their 286
scatter cam in my Cooper S and it's beyond belief. They compensate
for the built-in unbalanced situation created by the 4 cylinder
inline configuration and simesed center ports by timing the valves
slightly differently for the center and end pistons; the result is
very pleasing. :)
