IMHO, apart from the anti-drain down advantage, I'd say that spin-on filters
are..
Less messy to change.
Easier to get to seal to the machined face on the adaptor.
Cleaner to handle and throw away.
Easier to obtain.
But far and away their main advantage is that you get a new screw thread
each time - and the one on the vertical adapter can be changed. I've heard
of the block's threaded bosses breaking off on Tr*um*hs, though
overtightening and on the BMW's the thread holding the centre bolt goes into
alloy! These notions take on greater importance after many oil changes have
been carried out.
