I would suggest the criteria be not just the relation between the engine
and the wheels, but where the engine resides relative to the seats and
the wheels. In front of the seats: front engined; behind the seats but
in front of the rear axle: mid engined; over or behind the rear axle:
rear engined.

The TF, like the MGF is most definitely a mid-engined car.

Isn't any car with the engine between the front and rear wheels 
a mid-engined car?  The engine doesn't have to be in back (after
all, back isn't mid), just between the "axles".  In that case,
the MGB was a mid-engined car as well.
