Wes:
The 3-main crank has a smaller pilot shaft hole, so the trans has a smaller
end on the input shaft than the 3 synch for the 5 main.
You can put an early box onto a 5 main with an adapter bushing, but you
can't put the 5 main box onto a 3 main.
