Barrie,

I don't know if this rope was how the seal was originally made because 
every MG I have owned except one came without any kind of seal (long rotted 
away probably). My 67BGT was in fairly well preserved condition and did 
have the rubber rope installed, making me think that a seal actually 
belonged there.

So now I have also put one on my 72B but I used a glue  that was similar to 
Elmers, sparingly just to hold the seal in place. I figure the glue did not 
matter so long as it was not visible and could be easily scraped away if 
the need arose.
