All MGBs should have a rubber rope type seal on the battery cover,
whether they are CB or RBB. It is a solid spongy rubber of about 1/4
d. and is bonded to the cover by a brushed on contact type cement. It
is a round cross section but becomes more flat since it is compressed
for such a long time.

On my V8 and in the Parts Manual it is shown as a flat rubber ring
pre-shaped to glue to the cover, so one cut out of a mat would be more
'corect'.
