If you have access to a lift, it is feasible to remove the transmission
rather than pulling the engine.  The process (if I remember correctly) is to
disconnect the drive shaft, lower the rear of the trans down till you can
access the remote control bolts.  Remove the remote control and bell housing
bolts.  Then the transmission can be rotated and slid out.  This can only be
done with a rubber bumper non-od car.  I've watched it done, but if you
don't have access to a lift and a buddy to help pull the trans, you would be
better off going by the book.
