The crankcase scavenging system should result in a slight negative crankcase
pressure so this shouldn't happen. To test for this, with the engine
running remove the oil filler cap. The idle speed should change slightly
and if you put the palm of your hand over the filler hole you should be able
to feel the very slight vacuum. Basically there should be a port on each
carb, joined with a Y-piece, going to a port on the front tappet cover. If
your engine still has the emissions plumbing it should have a non-vented oil
filler cap and a pipe with a restriction on the top rear of the rocker cover
leading to the carbon cannister. The cannister has a pipe which is open to
the atmosphere. If no emissions plumbing it should have a vented oil filler
cap, and if the pipe is still present on the rocker cover it should be
sealed. Check the hoses and Y-piece from carbs to tappet cover are clear,
and the flame-trap on the cover itself. Check you have the correct oil
filler cap. Check the restricted port on the rocker cover, the hose from
the rocker cover to the cannister and that from the cannister to the
atmosphere are clear. BTW, any problems in these will prevent the
anti-runon valve from working as it should. Of course, you may simply have
over-filled the sump.
