This is a question regarding my buddy's '76 Spitfire. I thought I would send
it to you all since I know how many experts are out there! Here's the deal.
This Spit has been garaged for about 12 years. We got the engine to fire
relatively easily with some due diligence. Sounds quite good. Now, the car
will not go into gear. We have replaced the clutch slave cylinder and rebuilt
the master cylinder with an old seal kit the PO had. Pedal still feels spongy
which leads me to wonder if the bore in the MC is worn (was quite clean/smooth
however). System was bled thoroughly. The spongy clutch pedal goes down about
3/4 of the way and stops. Car will not go into gear with engine running. We
can shift it into gear with engine not running. As a test, we put the car in
gear and rocked it. Its bound to the engine. We pushed in the clutch while
rocking it only to find out its still bound to the engine. At this point, I
am thinking the clutch plate is bound to the flywheel plate. Any ideas how to
break it loose without pulling the entire engine? Thanks.
