As someone else has pointed out it *should* go the coil -ve, but if the coil
has been connected up the wrong way round that won't work.  If it doesn't
try it on the other coil terminal, it won't do any harm.  If neither works
check you have 12v and ground on the green and black at the back of the tach
with the ignition on.  If you do then you could have a bad tach or it could
be the ignition, when faulting these systems the usual advice is to go back
to points temporarily at least.  With any aftermarket ignition system all
bets are off as to whether the tach works properly or at all, you will just
have to suck it and see.  Some period electronic ignition systems came with
a separate tach module for this very reason.
