I've rebuilt three v.w. motors and each one of them lost that annoying high
pitched whistle racket when I exchanged the stock exhaust for a "quietpack"
header with single muffler.
On one I changed the muffler before working on the motor, cause I
couldn't stand that noise!
So you might change mufflers. You can still buy a glass packed muffler
pretty cheap.
I tried that on my mga but actually liked the stock muffler sound
better.
That's my experience.
